My New Favorite Quote

My New Favorite Quote

July 15, 2021 Goals, mindfulness, Personal Development

“Obstacles do not block the path, they are the path.” – Zen Proverb

For some reason, this quote really resonated with me.

Perhaps it’s because I’ve been a rock climber for over half my life. I’m sort of drawn to obstacles and the challenge of overcoming them.

In the mountains that is.

Not so much at work or in my personal life.

At the risk of mixing metaphors, I prefer smooth sailing rather than bumpy waters.

If I had my wish, each day would run seamlessly, without detours or setbacks. Of course, we all know that’s not living in a reality where obstacles are the norm, not the exception.

I want to believe if there is anything I’ve learned during the pandemic, it’s this – there is great value in seeing obstacles as opportunities for growth and impact, rather than problems
to be “solved” or overcome.

I hear from colleagues and friends that, over the past year, they’ve learned new skills, grown closer to friends and family or re-kindled past relationships, and reevaluated what is truly important in life. As a result, they have made a conscious choice to live differently, to live with intention.

It just takes a willingness to lean into the discomfort that goes along with unexpected change, rather than fighting or avoiding it (which in the long run is impossible), and to see obstacles for what they really are – essential parts of our life journey.

Easy? No.

Necessary? Yes.

It’s a lesson I continue to learn…every day.
